Thanksgiving 2013
a time of change,
a new city,
a new school,
a new home,
a new tradition,
Apple Pie
and turkey.

Anna and I were so busy
yakking it up on our  trip
from Kansas City, desination
Springfield, that I missed
exit 157,  so we took
highway 52 through Appleton City,
and we got to see its
Christmas life:
priceless. (but scary dark roads)

The morning began with
sleet and chill,
icy reminders that winter
approaches and time for me
to browse my photos of
sunny Greece, summer,
Mediterranean breezes,
to set sail for Aegena.

It's always fun to take a quick
photo with my Droid,
Kansas Husker fans
who aim to make a difference.

I love the color blue
especially in glass,
various shades to
remind me
that it's rare in nature:
sky, water, and
very few flowers,
birds or bugs.

Boston, at sunrise,
from the 10th floor,
a calm city,
clear, gentle noises,
before the bustle
of the day.

There is nothing finer than
the smiling faces of teachers
and students collaborating,
speaking together,
about the practice of writing
digitally in the 21st century.

Jerry's plants don't
look so great, but I'm
sure they will improve
with a little more time
and TLC.

Our new neighbors,
Ruby and Jim,
brought us a new welcome
mat, helped us move boxes
from the truck saving us
hours of time and Ruby said,
"Welcome home" and it sort
of took my breath away.

Brother Andrew gave me a
bargain on the
Tanzanian sculpture,
"Democracy," because
I so admired the beauty
of the ebony carving--
a community of human beings,
each with his or her's
own minds.

Despite the chaos
of unpacking,
I took a reflective moment,
debating about where
to hang a picture,
a silhouette of Jerry
from the 5th grade.

Small town boys
will always have
your back on
moving day,
willing to help out
a neighbor or a
teacher.

A pile of blankets
and pillows,
buffers for fragile
furniture for
the 461 miles trip
to our new home.

I haven't counted the boxes,
but I am grateful to my friends,
Jane and Angela who packed
most of the boxes with mostly
photographs in frames, and I now
know I need to thin the herd.

Moving into a new home
is a thrilling yet exhausting
endeavor, one of the reasons
only the sturdiest of folks can
ever be in the military; I applaud
my sister and her husband.

A good beer in a cool glass
after a long day,
rests between emails,
papers, house inspection,
appliance shopping,
Thai food,
and general mundane
events of life.

Aunt Jennifer held
onto Miss Rory, helping her
scoot the Fisher Price "motorcycle"
Grandpa Lampe and she helped
put together, teamwork that only
a dad and daughter could do.

The sun came through the vaulted
window on a warm November
afternoon, much like a spotlight
on the star of the show,
Rory Marie English,
enjoying her lady bug stuffed toy,
a gift from the heart from her
sweet aunt Anna Rose.

There is nothing cuter than a
granddaughter on her first
set of wheels, the sense of awe
that one feels knowing that
they can move very fast,
is a thrill at any age.

After the rains, the colors
quickly fade, so thankful
for modern technology to
preserve the brilliance,
realizing that humans
have always wanted
to capture the intensity,
through paints
and pigments,
                                                                                         the medium of art.

How quickly time passes,
my slobbering granddaughter,
no longer a baby,
getting ready to celebrate
her first birthday,
and I find I am more
like my mother with each
passing year,
my adoration of infants,
a done deal.

Today was a long, long day,
and I am tired, weak,
sad, stressed, ill,
incredulous,
heart-broken,
angry,
not unlike this day
twenty-nine years ago.

The flaming bush
and the truck, two Big Reds
that remind me of Jerry
back in Nebraska,
missing his love of Fords
and flora on a gorgeous
autumn day.

Marty said, "There's a tree
on Pickwick I stood under,"
and we walked further up
the street so she could find
this lovely umbrella of yellow,
so we could look up and be
enveloped in the color of the sun.

Walking Pickwick Street
in Springfield is a feast--
my appetite for color
satiated by autumn's
curries and cinnamons.

Of course, a granddaughter
is the sweetest of them all,
cute beyond cute, the apple
of grandma's eye.
